Objective: Given the high-risk nature of firefighting activities in mining and industrial environments, systematic identification and assessment of occupational hazards are of critical importance. This study aims to provide a comprehensive and structured analysis of the occupational risks faced by firefighters of Gohar Emdad Company in the Gol Gohar mining and industrial area of Sirjan, Iran.
Methods: A combined Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Bow-Tie approach was employed in this descriptive–analytical study, conducted with the participation of 150 operational firefighting personnel. Data were collected through interviews with experienced staff, review of incident records, and completion of JHA assessment worksheets. Risk evaluation was performed using a 7×7 severity–likelihood matrix.
Results: A total of 77 potential hazards were identified. The findings revealed that 38% of the risks fell within unacceptable categories (high, serious, and critical). Large-scale fires, fuel tank explosions, and smelting furnace explosions were ranked as the highest-priority risks. Bow-Tie analysis of these critical hazards enabled layered identification of preventive and mitigative barriers.
Conclusion: The integrated JHA–Bow-Tie framework provided a systematic understanding of hazard pathways and control measures. Based on the results, targeted strategies were proposed to enhance firefighter safety, improve operational resilience, and strengthen the effectiveness of the regional crisis management system.
